Product Description

The Crestbound Gore-Tex represents Merrells' deep history of boot making. Designed for trekking and hiking, the Boot features outstanding old-world workmanship and modern day technology combined to provide comfort, support, and stability. Upper Gore-Tex is the proprietary technology utilised by Merrell; constructed as a waterproof membrane, breathability and moisture repelling properties combine with equal aplomb, generating a much more habitable environment. Supplementing the waterproofing element already afforded, the nature of the full grain leather implemented within upper further enhances the boots capabilities of repelling water. The lacing system employed by Merrell is both efficient and secure with a combination of metal hooks and lacing eyelets enabling swift lacing. Completing the upper, a dual density anatomical foot-bed treated with M-Select FRESH, quells the spread of odour-carrying bacteria, demolishing said particles at the source. Midsole A UniFly midsole promotes proprioception, increasing your interaction with the ground whilst simultaneously providing protection from the most unpredictable of terrains. Additional support comes in the form of TrailProtect, a cushioned pad in the forefoot running to heel, assisting you over the toughest of terrains. Outsole Trademarked and internationally recognized for quality, durability and high performance, Vibram rubber caters to the wearers hiking needs. Teamed with an aggressive 5mm lug outsole, superb multi-directional traction is granted to the wearer. What is Gore-Tex? GORE-TEX is extremely porous, but the pores are up to 20.000 times smaller than a drop of water, yet approximately 700 times bigger than water vapor molecules produced during perspiration. Therefore, body moisture vapor can pass out through the membrane, while the wet and humidity are kept out. The GORE-TEX membrane can be bonded to different materials, depending on its use, and used as a lining ensuring the best and most prot

Superior rough, wet terrain boots.
I need to upgrade my review. I live in Ecuador and hike in the Parque Nacional Cajas, a high altitude wetland ecosystem. I went on a hike last week that started at over 13,000 feet, climbed up to 13,600 feet, then a steep downhill, and leveled off downhill to about 12,000. On the steep downhill I stepped into a small hole that was hidden under grass and twisted my foot. My ankle didn't roll over, my foot twisted and fractured the lower fibula, above the outside ankle bone. When I got down to level ground I cinched the laces as tight as possible and kept walking the mostly level, but rocky and intermittently wet, trail back to the road. The Merrell Crestbound boots didn't fail me on rocky, slippery, or boggy wet trail. I'm 6'5" and need good boots under any conditions. But on this hike, I walked 5 kilometers in tough terrain at very high altitude with a broken ankle, and never once had to worry about my foot wear letting me down. I'd give these boots 10 stars if I could.

This is a serious boot with lots of support, but surprisingly light weight. I wore them on a 15 mile hike the first day with no break-in and no problems beyond a few minor adjustments as the hike progressed. I like them enough that I am buying a second pair to put away for replacement when the first pair wears out. I wear a size 11 - 11.5. I went with 11.5 in these boots because I wanted to wear thick socks. If I had wanted to wear normal thinner sock I would have gone with size 11. I haven't really tested the waterproof properties. I'll update when I have more data on that.

    Amazing product.

I wore these bad boys immediately on an all day hike up Mt. Marcy (The highest elevation in N.Y.) in March. The temperatures dipped into the single digits and ice covered the trail. It was a 18 mile hike in terrible conditions. They were completely water-proof and warm the entire time. My feet were slightly sore after the all day hike but not bad, especially because I did not break them in beforehand.

I can't honestly tell you about their longevity yet because it is too early to tell. But they seem to be of excellent condition. Cons- I have wide feet and I wish that they had a "wide" shoe in my size. The shoestring hooks at the top are shallow so you have to take your time lacing them up, sometimes the shoestring pops out of the hook if you are not careful. But once they are in there and have tension you are good to go.

Solid product. Warmest boots I have ever owned.

These are great boots! The colors are outstanding, very unique and attractive style, and they appear to be extremely well built. I changed out the laces for some emerald green paracord to go with the green accents, looks great. The traction is outstanding from the Vibram outsoles. Although, I have not found the tread very easy to keep clear of mud/debris. It seems to stick in there and be a challenge to remove. The tread depth seems quite shallow compared to my last boots (also Vibram), hopefully that doesn't mean a much shorter tread life.

I do wish these came in a wide width. I have wide feet, and also feet that are substantially different size from each other - almost a full size difference. So it can be a challenge to find footwear that fits properly. My biggest foot is technically about a 9.5 to 10 in length, but for regular width shoes, I typically need to go to a 10.5 or even 11 to fit the width acceptably. My last hiking boots were wide width Montrails in a 9.5, which were great in width but a little short. For these Merrell Crestbound, I ordered a 10.5, and it's a fair bit long in length, but just barely wide enough for my larger foot. It's a little cramped on my small toe. It fits about the same as most shoes in 10.5 normal width, so I wouldn't say it runs large or small, in my experience. I do really like the extra wiggle room in front of my toes, especially for long downhill hikes. However, the extra length means I've needed to adopt some heel-lock lacing techniques to help keep my heels secure. If these boots had come in wide, I could have gone down a 10 and avoided some of that, but oh well. I couldn't find any wide width hiking boots I liked anywhere near the price of these awesome Merrells. The price is so good that I seriously considered buying two pairs of boots, a different size for each foot. But for now I'll stick with the one size. I was afraid going to a smaller size for my smaller foot would just be too narrow.

Aside from the challenge of fitment, these boots are very comfortable. They are still nowhere near broken in, having only been on about 10 miles of hiking. The uppers were initially incredibly stiff, but they are already much softer and more comfortable. I expect them to only get better as time goes on. They seem to breath fairly well (as I'd expect with Gore-Tex), as my feet were neither excessively hot nor sweaty worn all day. Though, the extra room I think helps a bit in that respect.

So far so good, they are a well made boot and comfortable (I did change the insole) they are waterproof and the vibram soul is quality, I literally live and work at the Grand Canyon so these boots get all kinds of weather and terrain, so far the held up well... I will update this in 3 months and we will see.
UPDATE: well after almost 60 days, the seam at the toe has split, poor thread/stitching, called Amazon and they want me to return them and then they will send a new pair.... these are my work boots, now I don't know about everyone else but I don't have 2 or 3 pairs of work boots to change out and wear.... I told Amazon just send me a new pair and upon arrival I will promptly send the others back.... (Common sense) but they will NOT Help, they say I have to return these, then wait for a refund, then order a different pair and wait for those to arrive... Poor customer service at best. and these boots over 100.00 you would expect better craftsmanship, but that is just not the case, very poor quality thread and stitching.
