I have a lot of boots and these are the BEST.
5 out of 5 stars
I have a lot of boots and these are the BEST.
In the Spring of 2018, I saw these boots for the first time. I do volunteer rifle marksmanship instruction for a national non-profit organization and at our Patriot's Day weekend we had a US Secret Service agent with his big bunch of Boy Scouts. I asked him about his boots. He told me they were his issued footwear and that he pretty much lived in them. One of his friends overheard the conversation and said, "Lives in them! I'd be surprised if he takes them off in the shower." I decided to investigate. The $400 price turned me off immediately, but they did look lovely and they were made in the USA. I put a price tracker on them and waited. And waited. And waited. One day I got a notification that they had dropped in price for the 13 EE and for some reason they also had an add-on coupon. They were still expensive, but much more affordable. I ordered them. I normally wear a 13 D, but from reading reviews and owning other Danners in the past I knew they were built on a fairly narrow last. I opted for the wider size. I'm glad I did. The hard plastic footbeds that they ship with are crap and I really needed some arch support. They were too wide as delivered. I tried some of those $50 Dr. Scholls orthotics that you can get at the big chain department stores and they were just right. No added volume in the toe box, but a nice flexible arch support. With those orthotics and a medium weight, quality, wool hiking sock they are perfect. I was pretty happy, but rather than writing a review then I waited to see how they would hold up. Now it's been over a year and a half and it's time to sing their praises. As I said, I have a lot of boots. Too many actually but I like to be comfortable and good boots are a must when you spend 14 hours on your feet. These are hands-down the best boots I own and are the most comfortable shoes I own. I also have a lot of shoes. Fit: I like a generous toe box and hate it when my feet swell over the course of a hike and I get blisters between my toes due to crowded toes. Doesn't happen with these. I also like to have boots that lace very closely together and with the EE width I get a very close lacing across the top of the foot and the halves nearly touch running up my ankle and lower calf. This is very secure and gives me great piece of mind having broken both ankles in my youth and sprained them many time in the ensuing years. I can be walking happily along, step on a weird edge and my ankle will roll right over. Not in these boots. Lacing: The full length Gore-Tex liner has a slicker surface than the usual split leather of uninsulated boots. It allows very easy foot ingress and the speed lacing D rings are genius. I pop my foot in, pull once on the laces giving me an initial cinch, then I tighten the toe box and while holding the slack I've made there pull the laces once more. Done. I then run the long laces around the back of the boot, back to the front and tie a double bow. I'm good for the day. Weight: They're heavy boots. Man up! Toughness: I have worn these A LOT over the past year and a half. You see how they look. They are well broken in, but still look great. I do not polish them. When they get a little dusty or dirty I put them under a faucet and gently brush the dirt off. After they dry I rub in a good coat of Obenauf's LP Boot preservative with my hands then brush them with a shoe brush. That's it and is all they need to look stellar. Looks: Maybe the best looking boot ever. They have great proportions and their quality of construction really shows through. Their stitching is precise. The hardware is high quality. The Vibram soles are aggressive and sure-footed. The little "Made in the USA" flag is very important to me. Should you buy them?: I can't tell you that for sure, but you should DEFINITELY try them. Everyone's feet are different. We all have our opinions of what looks good. Yes, I know that you can have custom boots made, but for what I paid for these and the time it took to get them versus a custom builder's cost and delivery, going that extra mile for what can only be a small advantage doesn't make good sense to me. Others will disagree and that's fine. This is my opinion. To sum up, the Danner Fort Lewis is in the tip top of the very best boots in the world. If you are looking for something super comfortable, very well made (in the USA), and likely to be the best looking boots you will ever own, get them.

I'll start off with things you might be concerned about:

    1. The footbed is part of the boot and not removable. It's comfortable and well made, but there really isn't room for a full aftermarket insole because you will crowd your toes. But there is good news - one of the best inserts on the market does fit. The Spenco 3/4 Length Orthotic Arch Support sold through Amazon at less then $17 delivered is the answer. Being 3/4 length, it doesn't go into the toe box and leaves your toes free to move. This insert is GREAT for flat or fallen arches AND it flexes! Arch supports that don't flex, don't allow your feet to work as they were created.

    2. I'm a big guy with big feet and wide legs and getting this tall boot on was a bit of a struggle (dance) at first. You will learn to love the fingergrab! You have to really loosen the laces to the point of unlacing one or two sets of the speed lacers to get them on. This is getting better over time as the boots break in. My point is, don't worry if you have struggle to get them on at first, it gets better.

    Somethings nice to know:

    1. Check pricing hourly!!! Prices fluctuate OFTEN on some Amazon items!!! Prices go up and down through out the day!!! I paid $232.03. BE PATIENT!!!

    2. Danner on their website suggests and sells 8 ounce bottles of cleaner and 8 ounce bottles of conditioner for $10 each. These cleaner and conditioner are GREAT and are the BEST products I have ever used on leather. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! This EXACT cleaner and EXACT conditioner can be purchased from your local Wal-Mart in the automotive department in 16.9 ounce spray bottles under the Lexol brand name for less then $7 each. More then double the product for $3.00 less and in spray bottles.

    The good stuff:

    1. These boots look so good, strangers complement you on them!

    2. The design, quality and detail are top-notch! There is no doubt in my mind that these boots will out live my L.L. Bean Cresta Hikers by YEARS!

    3. The comfort is almost like being barefoot. It feels like a barefoot that every time it sets down, there's a comfortable flat stable surface to rest on. Wearing these boots at my desk or to drive the car is more comfortable then you can imagine. In fact, these are now my MOST comfortable shoes to drive in! (There's just something about these boots and the dead-pedal in my sub-compact car - ankle support and foot comfort!

    4. These boots are Goodyear welted and can be resoled.

    Additional notes:

Someone made a crack on Facebook about me wearing a $330 pair of boots - I fired back that I would still be wearing these boots in 15 or 20 years and they could bring what they are wearing now and we could compare them. And besides, my feet would be WAY more comfortable.

I really can't say any more - if you like the style - just get them. I know some ladies that would look good in these too!

    *** UPDATE - May, 27, 2014 ***

I had to return the boots - I ripped the finger loop open across the stitching on the right boot..... These boots were just too hard to get on and off. I had to use a boot hook on the finger loop to get them on even after loosening the laces to the point of unlacing one or two sets of holes. I really liked these boots and when on, they fit me just fine, not tight, but somewhat loose (but not too loose). The lining and design just didn't allow me to angel my foot in without force. I'm going to leave the five star rating because they are great boots and if your feet fit them better then mine, I still say, "GET'EM!"

And if anyone cares, I ended up replacing them with Chippewa Super Loggers in black. Easier to get on, but VERY tight until broken in. I love them (but a very different type of boot).
