as a geologist and off-road marathoner, these are the best lightweight boots I've worn

as a geologist and off-road marathoner, these are the best lightweight boots I've worn
I bought my first pair of Ahnu Coburn boots almost 3 years ago to be my everyday boot during a 6-week geologic field study in northern NM and southern CO, and I just bought my second pair to replace the worn out first pair because I liked them so much. They far surpassed my expectations for the price range, and have proven to be the best hiking boot I've ever worn. If this is all you read, these boots have my endorsement as a geologist, desert and mountain hiker, and off-road marathoner. If you want more detail, read on. The first thing I noticed was that these boots fit my foot shape extremely well, which will of course bias my opinion. I also immediately noticed how comfortable they were, right out of the box. The Coburn is a very lightweight boot which still manages to have very good lateral stiffness. My old pair has almost 800 miles, and still maintains their lateral stiffness. In fact, I'll be wearing my old pair tomorrow for the Bataan Memorial Death March desert/mountain marathon, because my new pair was not shipped when it was supposed to be (DO NOT buy from the seller 'Road Runner Sports'). I've never felt more stable in any other boot. After wearing mine for about 6 months, I bought the women's version of this boot for my wife and she immediately noticed a difference in stability and balance. She said they gripped better and inspired more confidence on iffy surfaces. The sewn-in waterproof liner works perfectly, and mine continued to be waterproof after repeated cacti needle stabbings. The laces, somehow, have never come undone for me. I've never had a boot or shoe that I didn't have to re-tie or double knot for longer treks.. until these. I've never had to double knot these and they've never come undone through 800 miles of low desert, high desert, steppe, Rocky mountain and Appalachian mountain treks. They're magic. The lug material and shapes are great. These boots grip everything better than any other boot I've worn. Literally everything I've walked on, including very steep, smooth granite surfaces; steep, loose talus slopes; wet silt/clay slicks; slick, wet river stones, loose sand slopes; wet leaves.. the list goes on. Even now after the lugs are nearly worn off, they still grip most surfaces pretty well. Everything about this boot impressed me. Everything just worked better and felt better than any other boot I've worn, including Vasque, Asolo, Keen, Merrell, Timberland, Red Wing, Wolverine, and others. I haven't worn Salomon yet, so I can't compare there. It's always a good idea to test fit boots at a store, because boots are shaped differently, feet are shaped differently, so you need to find the boot that works with your feet, but for me and my wife, Ahnu is where it's at. The picture is new on the left, ~800 miles on the pair on the right.

What a really fantastic set of boots! Both wife and I already have other Ahnu's, she has the Astrals ladys high tops and I the mid-cut. After knowing that our other Ahnu's gave us quality and fit I was very pleased to find that these are by far the best I have ever owned in comfort, style and fit. As mentioned by the manufacture the toe box has plenty of room and my heel is locked into the proper place preventing slippage, the special soles give a wonderful walking on pillows effect with no stones felt thru the bottoms. The boots keep my feet dry with the EVENT liner material and gives full support in the ankles. I have had them a bit over two weeks and have had them on daily hikes of 20 + miles approaching 240+ miles total in everything from deep sand to sharp broken lava and these things really are a joy to wear and show virtually no use on the soles! These will be my main boot for the 2700 mile PCT in 2013 and I will be putting them to good use. Would I recommend these boots to others? Yes Yes Yes for those that have wanted a great fitting boot that is light weight, a boot that will be broken in within a few hours of first use and super comfortable than look no further these are for you. I have been giving other manufactures boots a test for the last year and feel that I have wasted my money in doing so, everything from poor construction, wrong sizing info, soles coming off to leakage problems thru the tongue from them. These Ahnu's give a fitting that is right on to the size I wear and they were delivered within the time period I expected. I am ordering another pair to have for the CDT and At in 2014/2015.

If anyone clicked on my profile, they would see I recently had to buy a bunch of new gear when I let friends convince me to do a 7 day hike up Kilimanjaro. Boots were one of my biggest concerns as no amount of training can brace you for the impact on your feet or help if you develop blisters or hurt your feet / ankles. I tried on several pairs of boots at REI and these felt the most comfortable in the store, but were ~$50 cheaper on Amazon. I read the good reviews and took the plunge, but was still a bit scared about how these would hold up for my first major hike.

I am happy to say, they were the perfect shoes. They came a little bit large, which any experienced climber will know is good. But for any other newbies, it is a positive, because it allows you to wear 1-2 pairs of the thick hiking socks in difficult terrain without getting blisters. The shoes were very sturdy and had fantastic grip. While Kilimanjaro is basically a long hike (no picking required), there still are times you are climbing up rocks and have some questionable footing. These shoes stayed comfortable, dry and gripped all sorts of terrain wonderfully. They were also very durable and after breaking them in for 4 months and then using them to climb, they are still in like new condition and look as if they will last for a long time.

I would recommend these shoes to anyone needing comfortable, durable shoes for the outdoors. Don't mess around and take chances with your feet. Pay the extra few bucks for the quality. It will be worth it when you are actually on a multi-day adventure.

Comfortable. I've been looking for a comfortable pair of hiking boots for months and I've literally ordered and returned 7 pairs of boots through amazon looking for boots that I can wear all day. Instant comfort without having to break them in is how I describe them. The waterproof lining seems breathable because my feet don't get too warm like I found in other boots with a waterproof lining. The lace eyelets are good and heavy duty. The boots are very light. I feel like I can walk all day in them. I usually where a 2E wide boot but they only had the regular size on sale so I took a chance and they fit perfectly so they have a wider toe box then normal.

I like the look on these ,but they fit too large. My feet are actually wide ,but these are even larger, alot of forefoot wiggle room .
They developed a somewhat annoying smell after 10 days or so of wearing them , my feet don't smell ,other hiking boots are a year old and no smell whatsoever.
Bottom line, a decent ,waterproof boot that I wouldn't buy again , not even for $95 what I've paid for them
