I highly recommend these boots for hiking or casual wear. I received my pair of Euro Hiker boots for Christmas 2011 and went on my first hike in them on New Year's Eve. We went on a short hike up Squaw Peak, Phoenix, Arizona, and took our time with it. It was an incredibly comfortable hike in these boots. They provide excellent padding on the feet and good support for the ankles. Of note, they are a bit wider than the typical boot fit. Pull the laces tight and you can compensate for this.

I love this shoe manufacturer, I have 7 pairs: City Adventure-Traditional, Earthkeepers City Chukka Boot, Cadrad Hiker, All Mountain Inferno, Front Country Oxford, Classic Two-Eye Boat.
Newer had problems, excellent quality, convenient.
I just do not like the insoles, they are thin and without support.

    True size: length and width.
Many complain that the shoe is too narrow.
This model has no such problems.
    Light weight, stable base.

These shoes are very stiff middle, finger on his right foot rubs.
Look at the shared photo by Michael.
Your shoes will look the same.
I do not like thick tongue.

I had a pair of these in middle school c. 1996. They fit beautifully then and I still love the style. However, these may have been great 20 years ago, but they have been surpassed. The sole is very soft, and the leather is thin--once broken in these flex like overcooked linguine. Also, the sole has poor grip. Expect to slip at the front of your step on wet pavement, or rocks. Maybe I've been spoiled on Vasque and Danner's "real" hiking boots in the intervening years, but for only a few dollars more, you can now get stiffer boots, with a slip free Vibram sole.

Once upon a time these were a great option, but they're only a retro fashion statement at this point.

i am sitting here wearing these, just having received them today, like a little kid with a new toy, writing this review.

i got the all leather all black (white layer in the otherwise all black sole of the shoe), but otherwise the same shoe. i did NOT want the version of these with cordura nylon panels on each side instead of full leather, mainly because as nice as they look, the appeal of these shoes to me was their total authentic cool retro styling.

these accurately look as if you came off The Eiger Mountain in the Bernese Alps, 1959 or thereabouts. yes, i know these are 70s era design, but back then classic 70s hikers still had strong DNA back to the classic boot styles of the 40s and 50s.

which is precisely WHY i fell in love and had to them the moment i first saw them on the internet. yes, i knew these were not the current day top of the line $400 pro hiking boots...these were like getting a 1968 mustang. a classic. you are getting the heritage (and these all leather versions ARE called 'Heritage' euro hikers in the timberland catalog).

that said, these still are very very nice HIKING shoes, light enough to be worn for a comfortable casual jean fashion look. but with enough of the legend to be a very respectable hiking function shoe in the mid price range. they are super comfortable, and have a surprising shock absorption as you bounce along even on asphalt.

the laces operate (which is indeed a good word for the gussets and hook system) to first tighten perfectly for the front and midfoot, and then hook around the steel 'hooks' and adjust to the upper foot and ankle...the thick sporty patterned laces move slick as a snake through the hooks as if you are operating a machine (mixed metaphor, sorry).

classic leather quality...maybe not the most expensive leather as on your $350 alpine hiker, but they look as good and may be almost or as tough over time, i'll find out. the soles do indeed look made for euro hiking, meaning a combo of urban and trail walking...i'd get a knobbier sole if you really wish to attack the rocks and crags...but then i'm sure you knew that already.

all in all i'd say this is a MUST HAVE shoe, mainly for the lineage, DNA and classic lines back to the classic shoes of hiking's past. a true retro shoe that most likely is more technically satisfying than those great shoes of the past given modern technology.

if you appreciate modern sports cars, but can dig having a 64 GTO or 68 mustang, just to be in something good from the past, then you will appreciate and fully enjoy just putting these on, let alone walking out in the world with them peeking out from under your 501s.

and no, i don't have anything to do with the timberland company...most of their shoe styles are too current and trendy for me. this is a beautiful throwback that i simply love and am happy whoever might have had the respect for style and function to make them.

I was curious and did a search for these boots to see if Timberland still made them, and I was somewhat surprised that they did. With that said, I'm not sure how relevant my review is going to be because I bought mine sometime around 1996. They always fit ok, but they weren't the most comfortable pair of boots or shoes I've ever worn. But, they have held up over the years, which is probably because I never wore mine a lot. But, with that said, in the combined amount of time since I've had them, they've still been worn an awful lot. Tread is good, durability is good, but they could have been more comfortable, and they could have been lighter. Not a bad boot though.

I don’t know what everybody is complaining about these boots take a beating. They are great boots, durability has always been good. I put these boots through everything and they just keep going. This is only my third pair in 20 years. Buy them

Don't believe any negative reviews about these boots, they are excellent.
As soon as I put them on they felt very comfortable.
I was worried about how long it would take to break them but that is not a concern now.
They fitted perfectly and look and feel top quality.

I read a couple of negative reviews about these boots. However, I was quiet impressed with these boots because the fitting is good, they look good; good grip on outside soles; the comfort level is good inside and around the ankle padding and on the tongue; laces a bit too long but that is not a problem they are a solid pair of boots ideal for autumn maybe even snowy winters. The only drawback is that they are slightly faded in some areas maybe due to the leather being treated with some form of coating and they get marked quickly if rubbed against anything also the tongue is not gusseted and the ankle area opens up a bit even when boots are tied up properly allowing dirt and water to get in apart from that they are good boots. Well worth the price I paid for them and made in Vietnam.
