Product Description
Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2016The boots are extremely comfortable to be steel toe. Bottom sole is soft, in fact so soft that no standing water in tile can make them slip. I work at a casino and our kitchens are super sized that at times we get spills. The boot holds on to tile floors like if its carpet flooring. I was suprised of how well they do on that part. The boots are easy to slip on and dont shake around your foot when wakling wich is very important for work boots. The construction of the boot is excellent for the price. The stitching on sole is genuine so i know this is quality foot wear. The boot does require to wear socks taller then the boot itself or it will rub on your skin causing discomfort. Dont wear ankle socks or you will regret it. Other then that this is what you get for $100 and I consider the pricing being just right. Not cheap at all so you getting your moneys worth.
Update: March 31, 2018.
The boots are still in one piece after serious rough work. I have replaced the insoles with same brand and they feel just as new. I still have plenty of life on them if not 20% more but the leather is starting to look beat up. the shoes put up with some serious work. I recently decided to use a metal scratch brush to take old paint, oil, and other dirty stains on them and they still didnt rip. Im sold with the shoe construction and reliability. The soles are just great and the show itself gets softer for foot comfort as time goes by. The only thing is you have to get a thick or work sox so your foot dont dance around inside while you walk.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2014Overall excellent safety boots. Very highly recommended.
Out of the box these shoes feel very sturdy. Thick and soft leather, noticeable cushion from Dr. Marten's famous air sole, industrial-looking elastic on the sides of the feet.
The reviews said order up for half sizes, so I purchased a size 11 US (10 UK). Unfortunately, the boots were too big by a full size or more. I am reordering a size 10 US (9 UK) and will update with fit information from there.
I am a manager for an aluminum foundry. Therefore I need good safety shoes for walking the plant floor, but they also have to be dressy enough for the front office. These fit the bill. I estimate they are 7 inches high, which keeps sand out; the lack of laces means that if molten metal falls on the upper it won't leak into the boot (it also makes putting them on/taking them off SUPER easy). The sole is thick and has good traction on both concrete and steel decking. The heel pad is thick enough to provide a safe notch for going up and down ladders. The sole also sticks out almost an inch from the upper, meaning I don't scuff/scratch/ding up my uppers when I kick things accidentally.
Happy with this purchase. Can't wait to get my proper-sized pair!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2014I was searching for a station boot to wear around the fire house to replace my worn out pair of 5.11 slip on boots. I personally prefer a steel toe for safety reasons and I was happy to find another option in the slip on style that offer a safety toe. Since I wear size10.5 boots, and these boots only coming in full sizes, I ordered the 11's. These boots fit nicely, are very comfortable, look sharp, slip on and off easily and fast as necessary for my purpose, and are well made. The soles also perform well on a wet floor (my 5.11's were like ice skates) and don't slip or slide. They get a little damp on the inside when reservicing apparatus, but I think that's just the nature of the beast in my profession. I am almost considering purchasing another pair in brown for daily use. All in all I highly recommend these boots, and especially so for use as a station boot.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2016:Update: It two a couple of weeks for these boots to break in but once they did they have become my everyday all time favorite boot and extremely comfortable and durable. Easy slip on. Best work boot I have ever had after 30 years of construction work. Not a deep winter boot but three season for sure. I've been wearing every day into summer and not too hot yet.
Terrible fit. Never heard of a men's work boot that doesn't come in a Wide. So you have to order Medium width and I tried upsizing, which was so loose my foot floated around. Went back down one size because no half sizes, and way too tight. Very uncomfortable. So, unless you happen to have a narrow foot, and happen to fit on an even size, no half size, these are about the worst fitting boots I ever purchased.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2015I needed a set of steel toed work boots to replace my two year old Red Wing boots. I decided to go a different route and try these Dr Martens based on price, comfort, and appearance. I already had a casual pair of Dr Martens that have lasted nearly 15 years, so I trusted the quality. These are definitely a solid, heavy boot. I have received several compliments on their appearance. I walk 8-10 miles on concrete for nearly 11 hours a day. At the end of the day, these boots feel comfortable. Several evenings, after work, I keep them on when I go out to dinner with the family based on how comfortable they feel and look. With my old Red Wings, I would feel such relief when I took them off at the end of the day, but not the Dr. Martens.
My main concern was that they would scuff easily and show light colored marks on the toes after the "new" had worn off. When I do scuff them, it is not that noticeable. I am very satisfied with this purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2016Having slim ankles, I should have known better - it slips around quite a bit even with thick wool socks bunched up around my ankles. Had blistering on the sole of my foot for the first day until I had doubled up my big socks the day after to close up the fit. The leather holds up quite well, although I haven't tried it around LOX yet. For regular machine shop/fabrication/welding they're comfortable after break-in and enough socks.

5.0 out of 5 stars
